Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPOPPROC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a tipover hazard: (a) 6th Floor - The operator of a Komatsu power industrial truck (PIT), serial no. 585137A, did not have his seat belt fastened while using the PIT to lift and transport steel beams, on or about 06/13/2005. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is establish and enforce the requirement for operators of powered industrial trucks which are equipped with operator restraint devices or seat belts to use the devices as stipulated in the current versions of ANSI B56.1, consensus standard for powered industrial trucks; ASME/ANSI B56.1a-1989 Addenda to ASME/ANSI B56.1-1988, and ASME B56.1-1993 Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks. In addition, seat belts have been supplied by many manufacturers of counterbalanced, center control, high lift trucks which have a sit-down nonelevating operator position.
