Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to crushing hazard while working and/or standing in the proximity of rearward moving motor vehicles such as, but not limited to, tractor trailer and trucks: (a) Location: Loading Dock #57, 57 New England Produce Center, Chelsea, MA: On or about 2/16/05, the employer failed to take steps to ensure that no employees were in the path of the rear-ward moving vehicles that were not equipped with a reverse signal alarm and had a restricted view to the rear. An employee was fatally injured by this hazard on 2/16/05. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to use a spotter while vehicles are backing-up.
