Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by: a)Bay 3 - On or about 3/2/05, an employee was operating on overhead crane that had a damaged safety latch on the hook. b)Bay 4 - On or about 3/2/05, an employee was operating an overhead crane that was missing a safety latch on the hook. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be the installation of a safety latch on the hook as recognized in 1910.181(j)(2)(ii) which states "Safety latch type hooks shall be used wherever possible." Also to comply with the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Standard ASME B30.10-1993, Hooks, Section 10- 1.1.1.2(b).
