Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: a.On or about December 21, 2005, an employee involved in the movement of a hopper railcar mounted the railcar standing at the railcar's "cut lever/uncoupling lever" rod. As the railcar was moving, the employee's foot on the "cut lever/uncoupling lever" rod slipped and the employee fell in front of the moving railcar amputating the employee's leg. Railroad industry practice prohibits employees from standing or stepping on a "cut lever/uncoupling lever" rod. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to stop the riding of railcars or follow the acceptable railroad's industry practices related to safely working around or riding railcars. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED.TION
