Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard from the drafts being loaded onto a vessel: a.On or about October 24, 2005, while loading the M/V Skier Star, an employee was crushed between the suspended draft and the rolls of Kraft Liner Paper that had been previously loaded onto the vessel. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to ensure that all personnel not directly involved in the lifting operation be kept clear of the area, and the flagger for the crane operator ensure that all employees are of clear before signalling the crane operator to move the load.
