Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPOPPROC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential failure of the cable yarding guyline system: (a)Lookout Road: On August 9, 2005 and at times prior thereto, the logging swing yarder (a converted Link Belt Crane) had an inadequate guyline connection. The yarder was guyed back to a stump located approximately 30 feet away by a chocker bell. Yarder's are guyed back to anchorage points to prevent uplift and the manufacturer of the chocker bell prohibits this practice. Amongst other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to connect guyline extensions by either a shackle using a safety pin connecting spliced and/or pressed eyes, or poured nubbins and a double-end hook. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
