Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CHEMICAL
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: on or about May 18, 2006, at the jobsite located at 21300 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX, employees were exposed to the potential of chemical burns from corrosive liquids during the employees daily task. The employer failed to provide a safe and immediate access to the emergency eyewash station due to being blocked by a parked Manaboard forklift manufactured by Crown. 1.The employer failed to keep the workplace free of a hazard to which employees of that employer were exposed. 2.The hazard was recognized. 3.The hazard was causing or was likely to cause death or serious physical harm. 4.There was a feasible and useful method to correct the hazard. Among other methods two feasible and acceptable abatement methods would be to: (a) follow the nationally recognized standard ANSI Z358.1 - 1990, Section 7.4.4 - "Eye/face wash units shall be in accessible locations that require no more than 10 seconds to reach and should be within a travel distance no greater than 30.5 meters (100 feet) from the hazard." Or (b) relocate the Manaboard forklift to a different location.
