Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico: El patrono no proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que esten causando o que puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados estaban expuestos a: a)Tripping and falling hazards causing severes contusions, lacerations, abrasions and death in case of structural collapse. Employees were working daily and continually in different administrative tasks inside of a building which have so many cracks on the floor and walls causing a serious unlevel problem on the floor due to the settlement. Location: The building known as Esteban Terrats of the UPR Mayaguez Campus. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the performing of a complete evaluation of the building by a structural engineer and a soil test around of it to verify the quality, stability and how fast the settlement is in development and to demonstrate if such structure is secure for the employees. a)Riesgos de tropiezos y caidas ocasionando contusiones severas, laceraciones, abrasiones y muerte en caso de colapso estructural. Empleados estuvieron trabajando diaria y continuamente en diferentes tareas administrativas en el interior de un edificio el cual tiene muchas grietas en el piso y paredes ocasionando un serio problema de desnivel en el piso debido al asentamiento. Localizacion: el edificio conocido como Esteban Terrats, Recinto Universitario de Mayaguez. Entre otros metodos, un metodo factible y aceptable para corregir este riesgo es la realizacion de una evaluacion completa por ingeniero estructural y una prueba de suelos alrededor de este para verificar la calidad, estabilidad y cuan rapido es el asentamiento y demostrar si dicha estructura es segura para los empleados."
