Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to possible crush hazards from falling vehicles while working with defective automotive lifts that had not been properly inspected, repaired or taken out of service. Auto Shop: Employees were exposed to possible death or crush hazard from falling vehicles, due to a faulty auto lift. DOCUMENTATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM. Feasible methods by which the hazard may be corrected: 1.Establish compliance with the ANSI/ALI ALIOM-2000 "Standard for Automotive Lifts-Safety Requirements for Operation, Inspection and Maintenance. 2.Daily inspection of lifts before each shift. 3.Ensure maintenance and repairs are implemented by qualified personnel. 4.Remove defected lifts from service. 5.Develop methods for conducting and documenting periodic inspections of all the lifts at least annually or more often if required by the manufacturer.
