Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
40.1-51.1.(a), Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employee(s) in that: (a) The employer had employee(s) exposed to portions of a Quipp tray conveyor system normally operated at three hundred feet per minute linear velocity that had unguarded shear points near the Quipp load station Nr. 011 in the upper mail room at the 7171 Wimsatt Road, Springfield, VA. location. ASME B20.1-1990 Section 5.9.3 requires that nip and shear points shall be guarded unless other means to assure safety are provided. One feasible and acceptable abatement method would be to design, fabricate and install railings to reduce the foreseeable risk of accidental contact with the moving tray conveyor.
