Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard(s) of struck-by or crushed-by: (a)On or about 09/15/04, at 290 Patton Island, Florence, AL - Employees were not prevented from working in, under, or near the bow section of a barge that was undergoing demolition, creating a struck-by and crushing hazard. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to train employees in the recognition of hazard(s) associated with ship breaking and to establish a safe area when demolition is taking place.
