Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the following: a.Where a lift assist device was being used to aid employees in the lifting and moving of automotive parts, the employer did not ensure that employees were protected from struck-by hazards. On or about March 18, 2005, an employee was struck by a lift assist device when the lift assist device loosened and fell from the swivel hoist ring that was attached to the Knight Pneumatic Balancer. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this include, but are not limited to the following: 1.Ensure that periodic and/or frequent inspections of below the hook lifting devices are conducted in accordance with ASME B30.20- 2003, "Below the Hook Lifting Devices", section 20-1.3.4; inspections shall include but not limited to include loose bolts, fasteners and proper torque installation of swivel hoist ring on lift assist devices; any identified deficiencies shall be examined and determination made by a qualified person as to whether they constitute a hazard.
