Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards: a.International Paper Company, Riverdale Mill - Gate # 4: On March 10, 2005, a security guard was struck by a truck that was stopped on an incline and was not properly secured. The employer allowed employees to work around vehicles without being required to ensure that the drivers of the vehicles had applied all parking brakes. The employees placed their bodies between trucks that the wheels were not chocked, or that the parking brake was engaged. One feasible method to abate this hazard is to assure that the employees do not place themselves in the path of a truck unless the employees have assured that the truck drivers engaged the parking brake when stopped and that the truck drivers remain seated inside their truck until it is time for them to be checked out by the security guards.y
