Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, below-the- hook lifting devices or bridge crane system fail: a)Corn Cob Department, on or about 8/24/05: A hoist was not being inspected on a frequent or periodic basis. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the hoists for wear, deterioration and malfunction as per ANSI B30.16-1993, Section 16-2.1. b)Corn Cob Department, on or about 8/24/05: A hoist had a damaged safety latch on the lifting hook. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Install a new safety latch on the lifting hook in accordance with ANSI B30.16.1993, Section 16-1.2.9. c)Corn Cob Department, on or about 8/24/05: A hoist had damaged to the wire rope in that it had broken strands and was kinked. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Replace the wire rope in accordance with ANSI B30.16.1993, Section 16- 2.4.2. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
