Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, below-the- hook lifting devices or bridge crane system fail: a)Throughout the facility, on or about 12/7/04: Hoists were not being inspected on a frequent or periodic basis. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the hoists for wear, deterioration and malfunction as per ANSI B30.16-1993 Section 16-2.1. b)Bean Soak Area, on or about 12/7/04: A hoist had a missing safety latch on the lifting hook. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Install new safety latches on the lifting hooks in accordance with ANSI B30.16-1993 Section 16-1.2.9. c)Bean Soak Area, on or about 12/7/04: A below-the-hook spreader beam used for lifting a stainless steel riffler, had no rated load capacity marking. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: Mark the rated load of the lifting device on the main structure or equivalent in accordance with ASME B30.20-1993, Section 20-1.2.1. Abatement documentation must be submitted for these items.
