Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a car: LOCATION: Establishment, Salvage yard a) The employer's established procedures for cutting up cars for salvage by tipping cars up on their sides and placing brake drums underneath the car to hold it in place, violated industry practice for safe dismantling of vehicles. This exposed employees to the hazard of being crushed and/or struck by the cars, on or about 11/16/04. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO UTILIZE THE AUTOMOTIVE LIFTS ON THE PREMISES FOR CUTTING UP CARS FOR SALVAGE. VEHICLES CAN REMAIN IN A FLAT POSITION. NOTE: The employer is required to submit abatement certification for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
