Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by processed firewood after it has been through the splitter head. The chains on the splitter chain frame guard had been wrapped around the frame and were not hanging down as specified in the owners manual. Also an employee was standing in front of the splitterhead, hand- picking the wood and then placing it on a conveyor. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the Multitek safety alert and owners manual to keep safety chains in place and not to have any employees near the splitter area while in operation.
