Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a)Correction Facility: An employee was operating a Ford Model-555C Backhoe. The rear shovel of the backhoe had a number 3 rebar inserted, instead of the pins originally provided by the manufacturer to secure the shovel coupling. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: 1.To follow the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) "Safety Manual for Operating and Maintenance Personnel" which requires that damaged and missing parts are repaired or replaced, and 2.To follow the Manufacturer's Operator Manual by using only service parts meeting manufacturer specifications, and 3.To train operators and maintenance personnel to inspect equipment for defects and to complete service and repairs before equipment is placed back in service.
