Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to a fall hazard while working from a work platform suspended from a crane: (a) On 6/20/04, employees working from a work platform suspended via crane #1059 on the outboard wingwall of the drydock were dropped 20 to 30 feet to the floor of the drydock. The crane load hoist drum allowed the personnel basket to free fall to the floor of the drydock. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the requirements of ASME/ANSI B30.5-1994, Paragraph 5-3.3.3(a)(9): The crane shall be operated so that lowering motion will be power-controlled lowering (no free-fall).olled
