Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LACKTRAIN
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of uncontrolled release of compressed gas during the handling of fire extinguisher containers (AKA: assembly fire extinguisher and/or fire bottles): (a)United Airlines at North Campus Maintenance Facility, Denver, CO 80249: The employer did not ensure the employees who came into contact with hazardous materials were thoroughly and properly trained concerning the disposal of hazardous materials in that the stores and tooling employees and mechanics were not trained concerning the proper disposal of halon 1301 fire bottles. This condition exposed the employees to the hazards of impact force, flying projectiles, broken bones, fractures, and severe trauma resulting in death due to the uncontrolled release of the compressed gas. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to train the employees who come into contact with the fire bottles of the hazards associated with the fire bottles. The KIDDE Aerospace Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) to Holders of Fire Extinguisher Containers 805500-11, 805500-12, A805500-12, 816900-1, A816900-1 provides the information concerning this training. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
