Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
P.L. 91-596 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard(s) of struck-by moving/falling loads: a) At the field donations center - Employees were exposed to falling loads while standing behind wheeled upright containers (carts) while they are being raised by the panel truck's liftgate. Some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Instruct personnel to stand away from any load and/or container being lifted, as recommended by the equipment manufacturer. 2) Equip upright carts with wheel locks as a method to prevent cart movement during lifting. 3) Provide liftgates with cart-stops to prevent carts from sliding-off the platform during lifting.
