Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The workers were observed installing roof trusses and were not utilizing proper temporary bracing in order to prevent the possibility of collapse. Bracing was observed on the top plate, but no other temporary bracing was observed. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1 - Sufficient lateral bracing of the trusses would create a level of lateral stability; 2 - Diagonal bracing as required by the Truss Plate Institute's instructions, and/or the Wood Truss Council of America's instructions, would create a rigid foundation throughout the truss structure, thereby increasing the stability of the structures. 3 - Cross-bracing between the web members could secure the trusses to each other over any surface connection. 4 - Following of any additional requirements or instructions as suggested by HIB-91, or the WTCA information provided to the employer. 5 - The hiring of competent personnel knowledgeable in all aspects of roofing and truss installation. ABATEMENT INFORMATION COULD INCLUDE AN ADDITION TO THEIR SAFETY AND HEALTH PLAN IN REGARDS TO HOW TEMPORARY BRACING FOR THE SETTING OF TRUSSES IS TO BE CONSIDERED AND CARRIED OUT.IED
