Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: an employee was in a bucket truck conducting work over a major interstate highway on a friday afternoon. The employee in the bucket was exposed to struck-by hazards by large vehicles (tractor tailors) and if the bucket truck was struck from behind, the employee would have been thrown out of the bucket to the active Interstate below. Feasible abatements could be: A road closure as required by the State Of Florida Department of Transportation (Traffic Control Through Work Zones - Index 600 page 2 of 10) "NO WORK SHALL BE ALLOWED OVER A TRAFFIC LANE USING A BUCKET TRUCK, UNLESS A LANE CLOSURE HAS BEEN SET UP IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPROPRIATE INDEX". Work also should scheduled for "off peak" travel time such as between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am.
