Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees while rigging and hoisting structural steel beams: a) 1158 Rapps Dam Rd. - An I beam weighing 2,045 lbs. slipped from the yellow nylon sling because the load block was not centered and the load was not balanced before hoisting. The beam hit a vertical steel member causing an employee to fall approximately 12 feet to the ground. Among other methods, two feasible methods of abatement would be that the qualified rigger ensures that only eye-and-eye slings shall be used for choking the load. The eye of the sling shall be firmly in contact with the load before hoisting. Also, the riggers should ensure that the load block be centered over the load and that the load shall be balanced. NOTE: ABATEMENT DOCUMENATION REQUIRED.ION
