Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to dust explosion hazards: a) Pultrusion Area: Excessive accumulation of fiberglass dust in the exhaust system and horizontal surfaces including but not limited to underneath circular cut-off saws A bulk sample of the fiberglass resin dust was analyzed by the OSHA Salt Lake City Analytical Laboratory. The testing results were 14.48 Kst (bar meters/second.) The sample was determined to be explosive. For reference, Pittsburgh coal dust has a Kst approximately 25 bar- meters/second. A feasible means of abatement would be to establish an inspection/maintenance/housekeeping program in accordance with NFPA 654 Standard for Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosion in the Manufacturing, Processing and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids, Chapter 4, Dust Control.
