Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing and struck-by injuries from collapsing communication towers: Located at 1000 Monte Sano Blvd., Huntsville, Alabama - 1000-foot Communication Tower - On or about 09/04/2003 - Employees were exposed to these hazards when the rigging configuration, the location of the load line and jump line shackle blocks on the tower, created loads beyond those that the tower could withstand when force was applied by the hoist. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to ensure that the rigging configuration and hoisting equipment for communication tower work is engineered to be structurally sound.
