Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards where aluminum dust was generated: In Production at the #51 Belt Sander and Dust Collector: (a)The dry-type dust collector was neither located outside nor provided with barriers or other means for protection of personnel. (b)The area around the dust collector was not posted with a sign that read as follows: "CAUTION: This dust collector can contain explosible dust." (c)The #51 Belt Sander utilized for processing aluminum was not provided with a placard that read as follows: "WARNING: Aluminum Metal Only - Fire or Explosion Can Result with Other Metals." (d)All components of the dust collection system were not electrically bonded and grounded to minimize the accumulation of static charge. (e)Fugitive aluminum dusts were permitted to accumulate on floors, equipment and building structural surfaces adjacent to the #51 Belt Sander and dust collection system. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to design and maintain the #51 Sander and dust collection system in accordance with NFPA 484, Standard for Combustible Metals, Metal Powders, and Metal Dusts, 2002 Edition.
