Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a medium pressure water hose nozzle. a)Chiller room - Sanitation employees were observed washing production equipment with medium pressure blasting water hoses operating at a pressure of 200 psi that was not provided with a fail safe valve/deadman control, exposing the sanitation employees to being struck by the metal nozzle if the employee lost his grip during cleaning operations. One feasible means to abate this hazard would be to follow standard industrial practice and install a fail safe valve/deadman (automatic shut-off) control on the medium pressure water hose nozzle.
