Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by high pressure cleaning wands while working in the prep bay: (A)Prep Bay: On October 1, 2003, and at times prior thereto, high pressure wash handles and spray wands operated at 1800-2000 psi, were not equipped with manually-actuated controls (deadman controls). ABATEMENT NOTE: Amongst other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to require the following as required by UL 1776, High- Pressure Cleaning Machines: 1. A manually operated controls (deadman controls), with the actuator located or guarded to prevent unintentional operations; 2. A lance or wand having the trigger mechanism located at least three feet from the discharge nozzle; 3. A cautionary marking (If the discharge fluid is heated, the product shall be marked with the following or equivalent wording: "CAUTION-hot discharge fluid-do not touch or direct discharge stream at persons.") Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
