Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: Sales Floor: An eight foot step ladder was used to pass merchandise up and down from the perimeter shelf. Employees were required to hold the items with both hands and lean over the side of the ladder and then pass the item up over their head. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is: 1.Provide a safe method to handle the merchandise, such as a specialty ladder, portable stairs or scaffolding that is suitable for the work being performed. 2.Discontinue the practice of storing large, heavy items such a slate tables and chairs and heavy metal furniture up on the perimeter shelf.
