Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing injuries due to improper automotive lift operations: a) Midas, 101 North Avenue, Grand Junction, CO: The employer had not provided sufficient training to employees operating automotive lifts (5) throughout the vehicle service area. Condition exposed employees working under and around raised lifts to "crushing injuries" due to improper operations. b) The employer had not displayed the operating instructions on the automotive lift in bay four. C) The employer had not displayed the operating instructions on the automotive lift in bay five. d) The automotive lift in bay four was not permanently marked to show the manufacturer's name, rated load capacity, model, and serial number. e) The automotive lift in bay five was not permanently marked to show the manufacturer's name, rated load capacity, model, and serial number. f) The control levers on the Hunter brand lift in bay three was not labeled with the function of each control. g) The control levers on the automotive lift in bay five was not labeled with the function for each control. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the American National Standards Institute for Automotive Lifts - Safety Requirements for the Construction, Care, and Use, document B153.1 1990. Paragraph 7.2.1 states that the owner, user, or employer shall display the operating instructions in a conspicuous location in the lift area. Paragraph 7.2.2 states that the employer shall ensure that operators of automotive lifts are instructed in the safe use and operation of the lift using the manufacturer- provided instructions and the Automotive Lift Institute publications, "Lifting It Right", SM89-1 and "Safety Tips," ST90.
