Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck and/or crushed by rotating equipment: a) Central Concrete Services, Inc., 2150 West 60th Ave., Denver, CO: The employer did not ensure that swing-radius barricades or other equally effective methods were utilized to prevent employees from entering the danger zone of a Somero S-240 Laser Screed during the loading process. Condition exposed employees to the hazard of being struck and/or crushed by the rotating superstructure of the machine. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to set up baricades or stanchions with warning lines around the swing radius of the laser screed and the lowboy trailer upon which the equipment is being loaded. Refer to 29 CFR 1926.550(a)(9) - OSHA's construction standard for cranes, which indicates "Accessible areas within the swing radius of the rear of the rotating superstructure of the crane, either permanently or temporarily mounted, shall be barricaded in such a manner as to prevent an employee from being struck or crushed by the crane." In addition, ANSI/ASME Standard for Mobile and Locomotive Cranes B30.5a-1994 Section 5-3.2.1.4a Moving the Load, paragraph (4) indicates "The person directing the lift shall see that: all persons are clear of the swing radius of the crane counterweight." Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
