Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Title 40.1-51.1(a), Code of Virginia: On September 30, 2003, the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employee(s) in that employee(s) were exposed to vehicular and crushing hazards while driving a Case Model 60XT skid steer loader. Skid steer loader operator training, including review of the operators manual, was not provided, although the company did have a training program for forklifts. One feasible and acceptable method, among others, to correct this hazard is for the employer to train/retrain all skid steer operators for the safe use and operation of skid steer loaders, in accordance with all warnings, rules, and operating procedures found in the manufacturer's operator's manual and the Association of Equipment Manufactures Safety Manual. The AEM Safety Manual states on page 10 "Read and understand the manufacturer's operator's manual before starting the engine." The Case Skid Steer operator's manual states on page 2 "Do not operate or permit anyone to operate or service this machine until you or the other persons have read and understand the safety, operation and maintenance instructions in this manual."ions
