Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of steam burns due to inadequate inspection and maintenance on steam lines and bellows-type expansion joints: a)Employees of Coors Brewing Company were exposed to serious burns when working in areas that contained steam lines which were not inspected or properly maintained. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazardous condition would be to implement a routine, periodic inspection protocol on all components of the steam line to include expansion joints, anchors, pipe guides, and hangers as described in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code for Pressure Piping B31.1- 1998 Edition. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
