Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck by hazard: a.VI Granite & Marble, 7350 Estate Bovoni Center, St Thomas, USVI: On or about 04/18/08, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by or caught in between falling granite slabs with dimensions of approximately 7'x 6'x 1' and weighing approximately 1200 lbs each. The granite slabs are shipped inside a shipping container standing on their edge. To remove the granite slabs from the shipping container, employees have to hold each granite slab vertically while another employee attaches a lifting device to the center of the top edge of the granite slab, exposing the employee to the "fall zone". ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to: 1.Develop and implement procedures that prohibit employees from entering the "fall zone" of unstable and/or hand-supported stone slabs. 2.If a lifting device is required to be placed on the slab, the slab shall be mechanically stabilized (not hand-supported) before entering the "fall zone" to install the lifting device. NOTE:In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
