Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a burn hazard: Employees performing maintenance jobs were exposed to the hazard of burns from the discharge of hot water through the temperature and pressure discharge relief valve which did not have a discharge pipe connected. There were two hot water heaters lacking a discharge pipe located on the Southeast interior of a mechanical room on the Northeast corner of the roof. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to connect a discharge pipe, that terminated no more than 6 inches above the floor, to the temperature and pressure relief valves as required by Standard Plumbing Code, Section 504.
