Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with low oxygen levels: At this location in the process room, production and maintenance employees had an access of exposure to low oxygen conditions in that: a.there was no ventilation system in the process room to remove nitrogen that had escaped from the cryogenic tunnels, b.process room air conditioning system recirculated the air and there was no designed make up air system, c.over pressure relief devices for the liquid Nitrogen used in the cryogenic freezing systems vented into the process room and, d.there was no oxygen sensor within the process room. An acceptable means of abatement would be to provide a ventilation system to remove nitrogen from the process room, oxygen sensor with an alarm and a means for make up air in the process room, and piping for the relief device which leads to the outside of the building.
