Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to amputations and death from rotating washer drums when the safety switches were not functioning: LOCATION - Washing Machine Area: An employee was fatally injured when the safety switches on the doors of Ellis washers #2, #4, and #5 were not inspected or maintained in a safe operating condition. The safety switch on the Ellis Washer #2, serial # 1257, was not operational when the doors were fully opened One method of abatement, among others, is to conduct inspections and maintain the safety switches as often as necessary to ensure their proper operation.
