Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed under a hydraulic lift: (a) Front shop, first bay: The hydraulic lift was not provided with an automatic mechanical device having a safety factor of 3 based on the rated load capacity to hold the lift in the fully extended position at rated load capacity. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the guidelines set forth by the American National Standards Institute/Automotive Lift Institute, Inc. in ANSI/ALI B153.1-1990, "American National Standard for Automotive Lifts - Safety Requirements for the Construction, Care, and Use."
