Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)The hazard of crushing injuries in the Casting Department/DC 8 Furnace Area where a pouring trough was left suspended in the air on the hook of a hoist for approximately 30 minutes while the operator was away from the pendant controls, on or about May 14, 2004. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS to instruct employees on the importance of lowering the load when left unattended or secure the load in the appropriate holding area per ANSI B30.16 - 1973, Section 16-2.3.2.3 j.
