Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: GRINDING DEPARTMENT: On/About 02/24/03, employees, performing grinding operation of different metals, including aluminum were exposed to the hazards of fire or explosion. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard is: 1.Dedicate the grinding booth(s) just for aluminum metal. 2. Disassemble and conduct thorough cleaning on a regular basis so that aluminum dust will not mix with other metal dusts. 3. Follow the NFPA 651 Standard for "Machining and Finishing of Aluminum" and the "Production and Handling of Aluminum Powders". 4. Place caution signs on the booth warning that "Fire or Explosion" can occur along the employee's training in the above safe work practices. 5. Other engineering feasibility.
