Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of pieces of metal being broken off of the hydraulic press ram and being propelled away from the press: a)South Work 800 ton hydraulic press, Hannifin 50 ton hydraulic press number 0905, and hydraulic press 0801: The ram heads on these presses had mushroomed and were not dressed to prevent pieces of the mushroomed area from being broken off and propelled away from the press, presenting the hazard to employees of being struck by the flying projectiles. Among others, feasible abatement for this hazard is: 1.Monitor the ram heads for mushrooming or other damage and the make the necessary repairs. 2.Establish ram head inspection criteria and train operators on the proper inspection procedures. The ram heads should be inspected prior to beginning operations each day. Certification, and documentation/evidence of abatement is required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
