Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that heated machine frames and components were not insulated or otherwise guarded from employee contact. a)Building 250, Unit 12 Thermoforming Machine - Rear portion of the thermoforming machine was not guarded or insulated to protect employees from burn hazards. During the operation of the machine, heat transfers to the frame of the machine creating burn and fire hazards. b)Building 240, Sterling Sheet Extruder - Die portion on the extruder was not guarded or insulated to protect employees from burn hazards. Among feasible means of abatement would be to comply with the American National Standards Institute, ANSI B11.7-1982 Standard for Machine Tools - Horizontal Hydraulic Extrusion Presses - Safety Requirements for Construction, Care, and Use and; 1) Guard or insulate the heated portions of the machines to prevent employee burns and/or fires.
