Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CAUGHT
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks: a.) Arnco Corporation, Elyria, OH: An employee working downstream on the Line #3 extruder and puller machines sustained an amputation when his finger was caught inside the extruded conduit. October 25, 2002. One feasible means of abatement would be to install install emergency stop devices at all locations where machine operators and others would be working and exposed to moving parts. b.) Arnco Corporation, Elyria, OH: The downstream operator of the Line 3 America Maplan Plastics Extrusion Machine, sustained an amputation of his little finger when his fingers were caught inside the extruded conduit, during the standard start-up procedure for heavy or bundled cable, on or about October 25, 2002. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are to: (1) Make emergency stops accessible to the operator by installing the safety devices downstream where the operator works; (2) Alter the work procedure so the operator stands at the machine where the emergency stop is located; and/or (3) comply with the instructions in ANSI/SPI B151.7-1996, "Plastics Extrusion Machines - Requirements for the Manufacture, Care, and Use." Additional abatement information is required for this item.
