Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to nip point of belt and pulley: (a) Pittsburgh, Pa., 109 48th Street, Foundry, Tail pulley of muller pan speed return; tail pulley located 3 feet from the floor surface had a 15 inch opening on a inadequate expanded metal guard. Among others, one abatement method which is acceptable to correct the hazard is as follows: Tail pulley is to be fully guarded. Often protective plates and adjustable end guards are required to cover nip-points between the belt and the end pulley.
