Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosion and fire hazards: a) 5401 W. Lawrence Ave., Jefferson Park, Illinois - Employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards where the gas supply to boiler #1, serial #R7980, was not shut off until the necessary repairs were made following the detection of a gas leak. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to shut off the gas supply where leakage is detected and keep the gas supply off until the necessary repairs have been made as required by National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54-1996, Rule 4.2.2. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
