Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck buy a capture hook. Location: Western Hills Middle School: 400 Phoenix Avenue, Cranston RI On or about April 1, 2003 an employee was struck by the capture hook on a vehicle mounted winch system when it was used to unjam a waste container wedged in the hopper opening of a waste truck. One feasible and acceptable method of abatement, among others, would be to require qualified maintenance workers to respond to all incidents of jammed waste containers, until and unless truck crew employees are adequately trained and qualified to safely unjam the waste containers.
