Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the wheels of the MIJACK Travelift Rubber Tire Gantry Crane, Model #1000B, Serial #6210752. The MIJACK Travelift was found to be equipped with a single wire rope wheel guard at the leading edges of the wheels. This Travelift was originally equipped with rigid welded tubular steel wheel guards which were bolted in place to guard the leading edges of the wheels. The original wheel guards were constructed of rigid tubular steel materials for the purpose of providing impact protection for the wheels and wheel frames. Because of the rigid construction of the original wheel guards they provide a higher degree of employee protection due to the fact that they are larger overall and they are not subject to any deflection, either in the upward or downward directions, such as the wire rope wheel guards may be subject to. The wire rope wheel guards do not provide the equivalent employee protection, and overall impact protection, that is provided by the manufacturers original equipment guards. One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to replace the single wire rope wheel guards with the manufacturers original wheel guards, or with wheel guards that provide equivalent protection.
