Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by garbage trucks: (a)Lidge Drive, Farmingville - An employee walking next to a garbage truck travelling in reverse was struck and run over by the truck; on or about 01/06/03. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among others, several feasible and acceptable methods to reduce this hazard are to: 1.Instruct and train employees in safe backing procedures as described in ANSI Z245.1-1999 Paragraph 6.2.3.2 2.Instruct and train each employee in safe riding procedures as described in ANSI Z245.1-1999 Paragraph 6.2.3.2 3.Conduct periodic field inspections of garbage routes to ensure the procedures are being followed.s
