Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The Employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a) Located on the exterior roof area of the structure adjacent to the Sure Grip Machine oven, employees working in and around the back access door changing a gas fixture were exposed to the hazards associated with a walking/working surface without strength and structural integrity to support employees, and were exposed to fall potentials in excess of 13'. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) A safe means shall be provided for access from one level to another where operations necessitate travel between levels for access. 2) Walking/working surfaces on which employee(s) are to work or access are to have the strength and structural integrity to support employee(s) and their equipment safely. 3) Pre-established sufficient conventional fall protection systems shall be provided and installed for employee protection before the employee begins the work that necessitates the fall protection. 4) Each employee on a walking/working surface 4 feet or more above lower levels shall be protected from falling by conventional fall protection. 5) Provisions shall be established to ensure the prompt rescue of employee(s) in the event of a fall, for situations where employee(s) may have an inability to rescue themselves. 6) Employee(s) who might be exposed to fall hazards shall be provided training to enable each employee to recognize and avoid fall hazards in the work place area including procedures for erecting, maintaining and inspecting fall protection systems, as well as training on the use and operation of conventional fall protection systems.on
